May 3-9: United Players Line Up For An Honour Guard As Pompey Lose Their Final Two Games

Tuesday 3:  Jimmy Dickinson has recovered from his head injury and will return to the Pompey side at left-half for the match at Arsenal tomorrow evening. Bill Thompson will switch to left-back in place of Harry Ferrier, who has a slight injury. 

Peter Harris will miss Pompey's match against Arsenal at Highbury tomorrow night. He will be in Dublin playing for a Football League XI against the League of Ireland. Cliff Parker will take his place at outside-right. 

The full Pompey team to face the Arsenal at Highbury tomorrow evening will be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Thompson, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Parker, Reid, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt.

Wednesday 4:  The one player who was missing from Pompey's Championship celebrations the other night was right-back Bill Hindmarsh. He slipped away to be with his sick wife shortly after the presentation of the trophy. 

Pompey were beaten 3-2 at Highbury this evening by Arsenal, the side they de-throned as League Champions. Ike Clarke scored both Pompey's goals in a pulsating match that neither side deserved to lose.

Pompey started at a cracking place and veteran winger Cliff Parker hit the post before Doug Lishman put Arsenal ahead after nine minutes. 

Clarke equalised for Pompey after 22 minutes but Lishman struck again 10 minutes later to give the Gunners a half-time lead.

The second half provided a wonderful spectacle of end-to-end football. Jimmy Logie increased Arsenal’s advantage with ten minutes left. 

Ike Clarke then scored a second for Pompey and it was a goal that many regarded as the goal of the season. Bill Hindmarsh picked out Duggie Reid with a delightful cross, Reid glanced it on to Clarke who thundered an unstoppable volley past Swindin. 

Tonight's defeat against the Arsenal was the first time Pompey have dropped any points against London opposition this season. 

Pompey will play their final match of this Golden Jubilee season on Saturday when they face Manchester United at Maine Road. Match Summary: Arsenal 3, Portsmouth 2

Thursday 5:  Pompey winger Peter Harris scored one goal and made three others when the Football League XI beat the League of Ireland 5-0 in Dublin last night. 

Pompey fielded a youthful and inexperienced side in their 1-1 draw at Millwall last night, and a number of the youngsters showed great promise, notably right-back Phil Gunter, centre-forward Jackie Henderson and outside-left Ralph Hunt.

Friday 6:  Pompey bring down the curtain on their incredible Championship-winning golden jubilee season when they visit Maine Road to face Manchester United tomorrow (3pm) 

Peter Harris will return to the Pompey side at Maine Road tomorrow after missing the Arsenal match in midweek when he was in action for a Football League XI in Dublin. Cliff Parker will make way for him. 

Pompey are forced into making two other changes, one of them positional. Centre-half and captain Reg Flewin has joined Harry Ferrier on the injury list, so Bill Thompson will move to centre-half and fit-again Jasper Yeuell will play at left-back.

The full Pompey side to face Manchester United at Maine Road tomorrow will be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Yeuell, Scoular, Thompson, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt. 

In the absence of the injured Reg Flewin, Jimmy Dickinson will captain Pompey tomorrow for the first time.

Tomorrow's match against Pompey will be Manchester United's last at Maine Road before returning to Old Trafford, which has been unusable since the war, although facilities there are likely to be fairly basic with very limited covered accommodation. 

Saturday 7:  Pompey’s final league match of this momentous season, against Manchester United at Maine Road, kicks off in 30 minutes. We'll have all the news of the game shortly after the final whistle. 

Pompey's memorable golden jubilee season came to an end with a 3-2 defeat in an action-packed match against Manchester United at Maine Road this afternoon,

Jack Rowley put United ahead by driving hard and low past Butler, but Duggie Reid back-heeled the equaliser.

Peter Harris flashed a header past Jack Crompton to put Pompey in front before Charlie Mitten levelled the scores from the penalty spot three minutes before half-time.

Shortly after the break Rowley scored his second goal to make it 3-2 to United. Pompey suffered another blow when Harris went down under a heavy challenge, although the mercurial winger continued, after a fashion,  with his ankle heavily strapped. 

Harris was eventually forced to limp out of the action, but Pompey fought back gamely and were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute. Duggie Reid took the spot-kick but saw his effort well saved by Crompton.

United’s defence was under siege in the final few minutes, but 10-man Pompey couldn’t quite find the equaliser. At the final whistle the United players sportingly lined up in a guard of honour for the recently-crowned League Champions. Match Summary: Manchester United 3, Portsmouth 2
