Named in memory of Gerry, a Pompey History Society member and co-author of The Official History of Portsmouth FC, this fund was started by a generous four-figure bequest from his estate and is ring-fenced by the society to buy choice items of memorabilia and artefacts for the society archive as and when they come on the market.
In 2024/25 the fund is aiming to raise £25,000 to purchase the gold championship medals of Peter Harris, which he won in 1949 and 1950 when Pompey were Champions of England. These were purchased at auction by a supporter of the society and we have an agreement in place with them to buy the medals at the price they paid for them.
Our target is to raise the money by December 19, 2025, which would have been Peter’s 100th birthday. The society already has a number of Harris’s effects in the archive and, in 2019, we purchased at auction the Football Combination medal he won in 1947. The aim is to put this collection on public display in 2026, including the two championship medals, provided we raise the money…
How can you help us raise these funds?
- Join the Pompey History Society! At just £10 a year, which includes a number of member benefits, including discounts on books published by the society and bought directly from us and priority booking for our events. If 300 fans join us that money will cover our annual running costs, leaving all our other revenue streams available for specific projects such as this one.
