December 5-11: The Blues Are The Only Top Team To Win As They Beat Arsenal At Fratton

Tuesday 6:  Ranger, writing in tonight's Evening News, calls on the Fratton Park crowd to end the negativity that has arisen from Pompey's poor home form. "See to it next Saturday" is his plea.

Wednesday 7: Arsenal Reserves 1, Portsmouth Reserves 3

Thursday 8:  Players Ike Clarke, Phil Rookes, Harry Ferrier and Bill Thompson represented Portsmouth FC in a sports quiz organised by the Supporters' Club last night. They were beaten 22 -19 by a team representing the Portsmouth Lads' League.

Friday 9:  Reg Flewin makes a welcome return to the Pompey side to face Arsenal at Fratton Park tomorrow. The influential centre-half and skipper has been absent since his operation for appendicitis on September 27th.

Flewin's return to League action does not mean that Pompey's injury worries are at an end. Jimmy Scoular is the latest casualty and he has been advised to rest his injured knee for at least two weeks.

With Flewin returning at pivot, Bill Spence will shuffle across to right-half to fill the void left by Scoular.

The full Pompey side to face Arsenal at Fratton Park tomorrow will be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Spence, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris Ekner, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt. Kick-off is at 2.15pm.

Reg Pickett is again on the sick list and will be absent from the Pompey Reserves side when they play at Aldershot tomorrow. Team: Humpston, Stephen, Rookes, Gunter, Cairney, Duggins, Gordon, Delapenha, Reid, Barlow, Bennett.

The Pompey "A" team are without a Hampshire League fixture tomorrow, so they go to Bordon to play the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (R.E.M.E.).

A young Pompey "B" team are playing a friendly at Southbourne tomorrow afternoon. The following side has been named: Haslett, Lillington, Butler, Moody, Howard, Rutter, King, Charlesworth, Wood, Wilson, Williams.

It is understood that Mr Bob Jackson, Pompey manager, and Mr Sid Leverett, director, have been in Sheffield for two days trying to resurrect a deal that would bring Wednesday's forward Eddie Quigley to Fratton Park for a fee of about £26,000.

Saturday 10: We are approaching kick-off at Fratton Park, where Pompey are hoping to start repairing their indifferent home form with a win against the Arsenal.

The final whistle has sounded at Fratton Park and Pompey have staged a late revival to beat the Arsenal.

Result: Pompey 2 - 1 Arsenal Pompey scorers: Ike Clarke, Jack Froggatt. Attendance: 39,527

Pompey pulled off an unlikely win at Fratton Park this afternoon, coming from a goal down to beat the Arsenal despite being second-best for long periods of the match.

The Gunners took a fourth minute lead through Peter Goring. They remained the better side for most of the match but Pompey turned the game on its its head in the last 12 minutes.

First, Ike Clarke glanced home a Peter Harris centre after 78 minutes. Then, seven minutes from time, Harris crossed for Jack Froggatt to tap into an empty net.

Pompey's thrilling comeback against the Arsenal this afternoon was all the more significant in the light of results elsewhere. The Blues were the only side in the top seven to win!

Match Summary: Portsmouth 2, Arsenal 1

Goals from Duggie Reid (2) and Ron Bennett gave Pompey Reserves a 3-1 win at Aldershot in the Combination League this afternoon.

Aldershot Reserves 1, Portsmouth Reserves 3
