December 12-18: Only Four Points Behind Now As Portsmouth Beat Newcastle

Monday 12:  The draw for the third round of this season’s FA Cup competition will be made at lunchtime today. Pompey, who reached the semi-finals last season, will be hoping for a favourable draw as they once again chase the elusive league and cup “double”.

Pompey will be at home to a Third Division club in the third round of the FA Cup. Today’s draw has paired them with Hartlepool or Norwich City, who replay their second round tie on Thursday afternoon.

The draw for the third round of the FA Cup has thrown up a number of interesting ties, all of which will kick off at 2.30pm on Saturday 7th January. The complete draw is:

Thursday 15:  The "will he or won't he" saga regarding Eddie Quigley's transfer to Pompey has finally ended. The Sheffield Wednesday inside-right has signed for Preston North End for a fee said to be in the region of £26,000.

Norwich City secured an FA Cup third round tie at Pompey with a 3-1 win in their second round replay against Hartlepools at Carrow Road this afternoon.

Friday 16:  Bert Barlow has left Pompey to join Leicester City. The popular inside forward, who was a hero of both the 1939 FA Cup final team and last season's League Championship team, made a total of 114 appearances for the Blues, scoring 34 goals.

Pompey face Newcastle United in a crucial Division One fixture at Fratton Park tomorrow, and will line up as follows: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Spence, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Clarke, Ekner, Phillips, Froggatt. Kick-off is at 2.15pm.

Pompey Reserves have a long trip to face Plymouth Argyle Reserves at Home Park tomorrow. Team: Leather, Rookes, Earl, Gunter, Cairney, Pickett, Dawson, Delapenha, Reid, Gordon, Bennett.

For their friendly match against Cosham at Bridgemary tomorrow the Pompey "A" team will be: Aslett, Butler, Mansell, Dilley, Howard, Newman, Wood, Charlesworth, Ames, Wilson, Williams.

Saturday 17:  Pompey will be hoping to record their second home win in eight days when they take on Newcastle United at Fratton Park this afternoon. Kick-off is at 2.15pm.

The final whistle has sounded at Fratton Park and Pompey have beaten Newcastle United in their important First Division match.

Result: Pompey 1 - 0 Newcastle United Pompey scorer: Ike Clarke Attendance: 30,455

Pompey closed the gap between themselves and the top of the First Division with a 1-0 win against Newcastle United at Fratton Park this afternoon. It took an untidy goal to win the game but it was generally a highly entertaining affair.

The winning goal came in the third minute when Newcastle's Batty cleared off the line and the ball struck the onrushing Ike Clarke and rebounded into the net.

Further chances came and went at either end but there were no more goals. For Pompey there was a worry on the 60 minute mark as Reg Flewin collapsed after heading away a powerful shot. The skipper recovered after several minutes of treatment.

A fortnight ago Pompey were eight points behind the leaders, but in two matches the difference has been halved. Tonight the reigning Champions are only four points behind Liverpool and the Christmas results can very well change the order of things.

Match Summary: Portsmouth 1, Newcastle 0

Pompey Reserves were beaten as much by the conditions as by Plymouth Argyle Reserves this afternoon. They lost 2-0 on a treacle-pot of a pitch at Home Park.

Plymouth Argyle Reserves 2, Portsmouth Reserves 0
