PHS launch Peter Harris fundraising campaign

There is little doubt that Jimmy Dickinson is considered Pompey’s greatest player and deservedly so having played 764 games for his only club and won 48 England caps.  But talk to those who were lucky enough to see the Champions play in the late forties and early fifties and they will tell you the player they looked forward to seeing play was Peter Harris, the speedy winger who scored goals for fun.

PH Medal

The Society is now starting to raise funds for the purchase of Peter Harris gold Championship winning medals from 1949 and 1950. The fundraising exercise was launched to the public at Neil Allen's book launch on Friday night in the club’s new Victory suite. And we have already received our first donations including one from club fan Paul Bartlett handed to us on the evening, one from X received on-line and one from Southsea’s “Breathe Easy” group.  Thank you to you all.

The Pompey History Society has an agreement in place to buy the medals from the current owner who purchased them recently at auction, to secure them for the future and to be able to display them to the public.  The target is £25,000 and it would fantastic if that figure could be reached before the Centenary of his birth on 19 December 2025.

The Society's steering committee have many plans to achieve their aim and more will be forthcoming in the next few months.

Meanwhile for those wishing to read more about Peter why not read our tribute here or a collection of photos
