PHS Elect New Chair

Mick Comben

The Pompey History Society has a new chair after Mick Comben was appointed by the trustees to take over from Colin Farmery, who has joined the trustee board.

Mick, a Pompey fan for well over 50 years and co-author of the club’s 125th official history, also joins the trustee board, as the members elected six new trustees at the society AGM last week.

Simon Colebrook is the new PST representative, replacing Jo Collins who stood down, while Martin Price, one of the club Presidents, replaces Ian Silvester who resigned earlier in the year.

In addition, Andrew Hind, the great grandson of former Pompey player, director and chairman Bob Blyth, and Mark Parnell, a Pompey fan since the 1960s also join the trustees. Andrew has significant top-level experience of the voluntary sector and Mark senior experience in the world of finance.

Matt Barker, the club’s Marketing Manager was re-elected as the PFC representative.

The society was founded in 2016 and became a charity in 2023 and is now moving into the next phase of its development to become a member organisation.

Colin said: “Mick will bring significant drive and enthusiasm to the role and I am sure the society is in very safe hands. I will still be very active in the society as there is a big project to start digitising and cataloguing our substantial archive and this change will give me the capacity to focus on that.”

Mick added: “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge. The society has delivered some significant outcomes in the past six or seven years, including commissioning replica division one and three trophies for the club trophy cabinet and the acclaimed Pompey Champions of England project, but we now need to involve fans more and build a membership base.”
