Dear Member
Following our AGM, I thought I would write to introduce myself as the new Chair of the Society, taking over from Colin Farmery who has held the position for a few years now. He will be a difficult act to follow. However, Colin is not leaving us, he is simply “moving upstairs” to the Trustees group as we are now, of course, a fully-fledged charity. We now have 7 Trustees and whilst Colin will now chair the Trustees group and undertake various projects for us, I will chair the monthly management meeting comprising various fans who want to be involved in everything we do. If anyone wants to join in please do let me know at info@pompeyhistorysociety.org as we particularly need people to help us as a stadium tour guide or help to improve our IT and support to our fundraising activity.
Our plans for the next year were outlined at our AGM but the big ones are to prepare an exhibition for the 100-year anniversary of the South Stand next August and raise £25,000 to enable us to secure the Championship winning medals presented to Peter Harris back in 1949 and 1950. A fan has already secured them at auction, and we now need to raise the funds to be able to buy them and put them on display to fans. Colin will take the lead on this and will be in touch, but we need to continue to sell the books we’ve published recently as that helps us a lot. The Cards and Stickers book and the 125 paperback version History Book, both of which you get a discount for as a member, will soon be joined by a book on the formation of the club back in 1898 and the people who made it all happen. The first two can be obtained now from the club shop or email us and we’ll help you get one. They will be for sale at the “Morning With Milkins”, our next event, see below. I’ll let you know when the formation book is available.
And of course, our member events are important to us. The plan for the next 12 months is as follows but I’d love to hear what you think and if you have any ideas for events that we can run. Currently the plan is:-
October 30th 2024 @ 10.30am - 'A Morning With Milkins' - a members morning hosted by Colin in the Legends Lounge, Fratton Park, with the opportunity to chat to John Milkins, the former Pompey custodian who made approaching 400 appearances over 13 seasons in the 1960's/ 1970's. If you have any memorabilia you would like to display to other members, please bring it along. Please book your FREE ticket using the link below, so we know you are coming - thank you!

December 4th 2024 @ 7pm - An evening event including a presentation on the founding of the club from myself followed by a Q&A on the 1983 period with two ex-players hosted by Johnny Moore. Details will follow.
January 29th 2025 @10am - A themed event based on feedback from attendees at October 30th event
February 5th 2025 @ 7pm - An evening event covering two topics - A presentation from George Malcolmson on the work of club photographer Stephen Cribb from 1898 for some decades and then a presentation on the career of Peter Harris, England and Portsmouth, in the 40s. 50s and 60s from Colin and myself.
April 11th 2025 @ evening time tba - Hall of Fame dinner – inductions into the Hall of Fame
September/October 2025 - time/date tba - The History of Stadium Design. An evening with Simon Inglis and Michael Saunders. Simon is the foremost writer on football stadia in the country and in keen to help us celebrate the anniversary of the South Stand. Simon will talk on the history of football stadia and then Michael Saunders, architect and long-time fan, will present alongside Colin on Fratton Parks development, obviously including the South Stand.
We also intend to have a Programme Fair plus other evening events when we can fit them in:-
- The History of Women’s Football and the History of the Portsmouth Women’s Club - Alex Jackson, National Football Museum Curator
• The History of Football Kits - shirts, shorts, socks and boots - Dave Moor (who runs the historical kits website)
• Pompey's 2002/2003 season - matches and players
Do let us know about other suggestions what you think or want to see by emailing us at info@pompeyhistorysociety.org
Thanks a lot.
Mick Comben.
