September 20-30: Pompey March On But Apologise To Fans After Crackly Telephone Line Relays Wrong Score

Tuesday 21: Pompey reserves continue their strenuous opening programme with a Football Combination match against Bristol City Reserves at Fratton Park tomorrow night. Kick-off is at 5.30pm.

Wednesday 22: Portsmouth Reserves take on Bristol City at Fratton Park tonight (5.30pm) and will field the side that overwhelmed Coventry City on Saturday. Pompey Reserves: Humpston, Yeuell, Hudson, Bowler, McCoy, Foxton, Brown, Delapenha, Asher, Lawler, Parker 

Pompey have apologised to supporters at the Reserves match on Saturday for wrongly announcing that the first team had been beaten 1-0 at Manchester City. An official misheard the score due to a crackly and unclear telephone line from Manchester 

Portsmouth Reserves beat Bristol City Reserves 1-0 at Fratton Park tonight but it was not a performance that will have impressed the 4,500 supporters who were there to see it. Asher scored the goal after running on to a through-ball from Lawler.  

Match Summary: Portsmouth Reserves 1, Bristol City Reserves 0

All injuries in the camp have healed and Portsmouth will once again be unchanged when they face Sheffield United at Fratton Park tomorrow (3pm). Pompey: Butler, Rookes, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Barlow, Reid, Phillips, Froggatt. 

Friday 24: Portsmouth Reserves travel to the capital to face Tottenham Hotspur Reserves at White Hart Lane tomorrow (3pm). Pompey Reserves: Humpston, Hindmarsh, Drummond, Bowler, McCoy, Foxton, Brown, Delapenha, Clarke, Elder, Parker. 

The Pompey “A” team cross the water tomorrow to play Cowes Reserves and their side will be: Aslett, Hall, Butler, Edwards, Duggins, McDonald, Wood, Gordon, Field, Lawler, Evans. 

Saturday 25: We’ll be bringing you all the news from Pompey’s big match against Sheffield United at Fratton Park shortly after the final whistle. 

Len Phillips and Peter Harris (2) scored the goals as Pompey completed a comfortable 3-0 win over Sheffield United in front of 36,240 supporters at Fratton Park this afternoon.

Football MailThe south stand was declared full and its turnstiles were closed an hour and a half before kick-off, but fans were still streaming onto the well-populated terraces as the teams came out. 

Pompey set the early pace and Phillips put them ahead in the ninth minute with his first goal of the season. Reid fed him a through ball, and the Londoner raced away to plant a firm shot across Blades’ goalkeeper Smith.

Pompey doubled their lead in the 54th minute when a powerful shot from Peter Harris hit Smith full in the face, and it was Harris himself who followed up to knock the rebound over the line.

A minute from time Harris scored his second goal, and Pompey’s third, when he latched on to a Reid pass and cleverly beat Smith with a curling shot. 

This afternoon’s win extends Portsmouth’s unbeaten start to the season to ten matches, and few will argue against the view that they are beginning to look like serious Championship contenders in this their golden jubilee year.

Ike Clarke scored twice to give Pompey Reserves a fine 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur Reserves at White Hart Lane this afternoon.

Sunday 26: Pompey’s win against Sheffied United, defeat for Saints at Sheffield Wednesday, and Aylmer's seven-goal haul for Portsmouth Electricity in their 8-4 win at Thornycroft in the FA Amateur Cup. You can read all about it in tonight's Football Mail.

Yesterday’s 2-1 win for Pompey Reserves meant they became the first side to beat Tottenham Hotspur Reserves at White Hart Lane since the season before last!

Tuesday 28: Pompey Reserves and Tottenham Hotspur Reserves meet again in a Combination League fixture at Fratton Park tomorrow night (kick-off 5.15pm). The teams met just three days ago at White Hart Lane, where Portsmouth won 2-1.

Wednesday 29: Portsmouth Reserves beat Tottenham Hotspur Reserves 3-2 at Fratton Park this evening, thus completing a five-day “double” over the Londoners. Clarke, Brown and Delapenha scored the Pompey goals. The crowd was in excess of 5,000.

Thursday 30: Two Pompey players have joined Swindon Town of the Third Division (South). Centre-half George Hudson and left-half John Foxton have departed Fratton Park for the Wiltshire club after appearing regularly for Portsmouth Reserves this season. 

At a special meeting of Pompey shareholders it was agreed by an overwhelming majority that the directors be given authority to spend what they considered a “reasonable amount” in connection with the club's Golden Jubilee celebrations. 

Pompey Chairman Mr R V Stokes has told shareholders that it is proposed to entertain friends of the club from throughout the land, including officers of the Football Association and Football League, and two representatives from each league club 

Players from previous Pompey promotion sides, and the cup final teams of 1929, 1934 and 1939 will also be guests of the club at the Golden Jubilee celebrations at the end of November.  

Pompey have renewed their “come early” plea to supporters as they prepare for a crowd almost certain to exceed 40,000 when they entertain Newcastle United on Saturday. Supporters are also urged to have the correct money ready at the turnstiles 

Following an anonymous tip-off Pompey have issued a warning to supporters that “pirate” match programmes may be offered for sale around the ground when the Blues entertain Newcastle on Saturday.
