October 17-23: Charity Shield Is Drawn But Pompey Keep The Cup First Before Losing To West Brom
Monday 17: League Champions Pompey will next be in action the day after tomorrow when they meet FA Cup holders Wolverhampton Wanderers at Highbury in the annual FA Charity Shield match.
Tuesday 18: Pompey take on Wolves in the Charity Shield at Highbury tomorrow without the services of Len Phillips, who has 'flu. The Pompey team will be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Scoular, Thompson, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Clarke, Barlow, Froggatt.
When Bert Barlow lines up for Pompey against Wolves at Highbury tomorrow he will be making his first appearance since the ill-fated FA Cup semi-final against Leicester City on the same ground nearly seven months ago.
Advance ticket sales suggest that Wolves fans will be outnumbered by their Pompey counterparts by about four or five to one at Highbury tomorrow afternoon. The FA admits that ticket sales generally have been disappointing.
Pompey Reserves are at home to Bristol City Reserves in the Combination League tomorrow (3pm). Maurice Leather gets another chance in goal, and Lindy Delapenha returns after injury.

Wednesday 19: Today's Charity Shield fixture between Pompey and Wolves is the latest in the series begun in 1908 when the FA decided that a charity match be played annually the object being that charity should benefit by receiving the receipts of these matches.
The first Charity Shield match, in 1908, was between Manchester United and Queens Park Rangers. The two teams were respectively champions of the Football League and the Southern League.
On six occasions the Charity Shield fixture has been contested by teams made up of Amateurs v Professionals.
A variation on the Amateurs v Professionals Charity Shield theme came in 1927 when Cardiff City, as FA Cup holders, played Corinthians.
There are just 15 minutes until kick off in the Charity Shield fixture between Pompey and Wolves but Highbury is little more than a third full. Several thousand Portsmouth supporters are present but Wolves appear to have a fairly sparse following.
The final whistle has sounded at Highbury and it has ended all square in the FA Charity Shield match.

Pompey and Wolves will share the Charity Shield after the sides drew 1-1 at Highbury this afternoon. Duggie Reid's 32nd minute goal put the Blues ahead, but Johhny Hancocks equalised for Wolves with a controversially awarded penalty after 62 mins.
Pompey were unlucky not to win a match in which they played some excellent football. Although the atmosphere was somewhat subdued the crowd of 25,000 will have been thoroughly entertained.
Pompey and Wolves have tossed a coin for first "custody" of the Charity Shield. Pompey won the toss and will be taking the trophy home with them tonight. They will keep it for six months before passing it on to the Wolves.

Reserve winger Jimmy Dawson is called up for his Pompey first-team debut against West Bromwich Albion tomorrow. Reg Pickett will make just his second appearance. Veterans Bert Barlow and Cliff Parker also make a return to league action for Pompey.

Patched-up Pompey crashed to a 3-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion this afternoon. Inwood and Williams gave the Throstles a 2-0 interval lead. Billy Elliott added a third after 62 minutes. Scoular went close for Pompey late on.
Wolves top the First Division table after this afternoon's matches, with 21 points from 13 games. Liverpool have 19 points from 13 games, Manchester United 18 from 13, and Arsenal 17 from 14. Pompey are fifth, with 15 points from 13 games.
