October 10-16: Concerns Expressed About Overcrowding As Pompey Beat Derby

Monday 10:  Jimmy Dickinson has been named in the England side to play Wales at Ninian Park, Cardiff, on Saturday. Peter Harris has been left out, despite his eye-catching performance against Eire last month. 

Tuesday 11:  Pompey inside-forward Bert Barlow will put his recovery from injury to the test with a run-out for an otherwise youthful Reserves side against Charlton Athletic in the Midweek League tomorrow. Kick-off at Fratton Park will be at 3pm.

Wednesday 12:  Pompey officials today met with police representatives to discuss the arrangements for "packing" crowds at Fratton Park. The meeting was convened after concerns were expressed about overcrowding at the Milton End in the recent match against Wolves 

23-year-old Reg Pickett is likely to be handed his first-team debut when Pompey take on Derby County at Fratton Park on Saturday. The former Weymouth player will deputise at left-half for Jimmy Dickinson, who has been called up by England.

 British Railways will be running an excursion train to West Bromwich for Pompey's match at The Hawthorns on 22nd October.

Thursday 13:  Pompey have a new variety of chrysanthemum named after them. "Portsmouth Champion" has salmon pink petals, tinged with bronze on the reverse. It was raised by Mr J Woolman, the world-famous chrysanthemum grower and a director of Birmingham City

Friday 14:  Pompey take on Derby County at Fratton Park tomorrow. The Blues will again be without Reg Flewin, who is continuing his recovery from an appendix operation; they will also be missing Jimmy Dickinson, who is on England duty.

Bill Thompson will continue to deputise for Reg Flewin at centre half, and Reg Pickett is brought in to fill Jimmy Dickinson's left-half berth for tomorrow's match against Derby County. 

The full Pompey line-up for tomorrow's match against Derby County will be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Scoular, Thompson, Pickett, Harris, Reid, Clarke,Phillips, Froggatt. Kick off at Fratton Park is at 3pm.

Pompey Reserves have a long trip to face Norwich City Reserves at Carrow Road tomorrow. The team will be: Humpston, Turner, Rookes, Spence, Cairney, Elder, Dawson, Barlow, Asher, Gordon, Parker. 

Pompey "A" do not have a Hampshire League match tomorrow but the following team has been selected to play St John's College at Bridgemary: Aslett, Butler, Mansell, Macdonald, Howard, Andrews, Wood, Wilson, Ames, Henderson, Hunt. 

Kenneth Ames, the 15-year-old Dorset schoolboy international who was signed by Pompey in June, has been selected to play for Dorset against Cornwall at Bridport on October 22. 

Saturday 15:  Both Pompey and Derby County, who face each other at Fratton Park this afternoon, have players on international duty.

With 15 minutes to go until kick-off at Fratton Park there is thankfully no sign of any repetition of the worrying scenes before the last home match when overcrowding on the terraces resulted in a number of spectators suffering crush injuries.

The final whistle has sounded at Fratton Park, and it's two more points for Pompey!

Pompey hit top form to beat Derby County 3-1 at Fratton Park this afternoon. The Blues were in total command throughout and Reg Pickett, deputising for Jimmy Dickinson, made an encouraging debut.  

Duggie Reid put the Blues ahead in the eighth minute. Ike Clarke doubled the advantage before half-time, and Jack Froggatt extended the lead on 65 minutes. Jack Stamps replied with a penalty for Derby just before the end.

Tonight Pompey are in fourth place in the First Division table with 15 points, six points behind league-leaders Wolves. Liverpool are on 18 points,  Manchester United are on 16. All the clubs have played 12 matches.

Pompey Reserves went down 2-0 to Norwich City Reserves in their Combination League match at Carrow Road this afternoon.
