Norwich City of Division Three (South) sprang a major surprise at Fratton Park this afternoon when they held League Champions Pompey to a draw in the third round of the FA Cup and thus force a replay at Carrow Road next Thursday afternoon.
Pompey took the lead in the 28th minute when a lob forward by Harry Ferrier dropped into the penalty area and Lindy Delapenha rose above a defender to force the ball home - but there was more than a suspicion of handball by the Jamaican.
The Canaries came back strongly, causing Pompey numerous problems. The Blues were rocked when Kinsey stabbed the ball into the net for a deserved equaliser on the hour mark.
The nearest either side came to scoring in the final half-hour was when Pompey's Len Phillips saw his header cleared off the line. At the final whistle the Norwich team and their supporters celebrated a remarkable performance and result.
Norwich City will now return to East Anglia to prepare for the replay, which some observers are already labelling the biggest match in Carrow Road's history. Pompey supporters are asked to await an official announcement before applying for tickets.
The receipts from a 42,059 cup-tie crowd at Fratton Park this afternoon totalled £3,503-0s-9d.
