Gradually Pompey began to take the initiative and they went ahead three minutes before half-time when Duggie Reid hooked the ball into the net.
Pompey's goal appeared to break the home side's resolve and as the Blues took a stranglehold on the game Reid secured the win with a penalty on 78 minutes.
Reid was denied a hat-trick in the closing minutes when, with 'keeper Nethercroft beaten, his shot was turned behind by Duffy.
