August 16-22: The Golden Jubilee Season Kicks Off With A Good Point At Preston

Ike ClarkeMonday 16: With six days to go before the first match of Pompey’s 50th season the club’s Chairman, Mr R Vernon Stokes, has addressed a meeting of the club’s playing staff and laid down this challenge: “Win us the Championship for our Golden Jubilee!” 

Mr Stokes spoke of the club fighting its way up from the second division of the Southern League and retaining its place among football’s elite for 21 years. “It follows that we should be among the Championship contenders” he added.

Friday 20: Ike Clarke, pictured, who has a mouth abscess, has been ruled out of the Pompey team to face Preston in the first match of the season tomorrow. His place at centre-forward will be taken by Froggatt, and Barlow will come in at outside-left.

Pompey team v Preston tomorrow (3pm): Butler, Rookes, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Froggatt, Phillips, Barlow. The party left the town station this morning to travel north via London, and will stay at a Blackpool hotel tonight

Saturday 21: Portsmouth reserves kick off their Combination League season with a match against Bristol Rovers at Fratton Park this afternoon (3pm). 19 year old Charlie Dore will be in goal, as regular ‘keeper Ron Humpston has broken two bones in his hand. 

Spectators at today’s Pompey Reserves v Bristol Rovers Reserves match at Fratton Park will be getting their money’s worth. After the final whistle they will be able to stay on to see the Pompey “A” team take on Botley in the Hampshire League. 

Portsmouth’s first match of the season at Preston this afternoon will kick off shortly despite the pools of water on the Deepdale pitch caused by twelve hours of heavy rain. 

Portsmouth got their Golden Jubilee season off to a positive start with a well-deserved 2-2 draw at Preston this afternoon. The Blues recovered from the shock of being two goals down shortly after half time to fight back and claim a point.

Dougal gave Preston the lead on the stroke of half time, and Tom Finney scored from a penalty to double the advantage in the 52nd minute.

Portsmouth fought back gamely, and Reid reduced the arrears with a header from Froggatt’s inch-perfect cross. Then Barlow fired home after intercepting a pass that held up on the wet pitch, and Pompey had a share of the spoils. Match Summary: Preston North End 2, Portsmouth 2

Portsmouth reserves got their Combination League season off to a wonderful start with a 5-0 victory over Bristol Rovers at Fratton Park this afternoon. Delapenha (2), Juliussen, Beale and Thompson scored the Pompey goals. Match Summary: Portsmouth Reserves 5, Bristol Rovers Reserves 0

Portsmouth “A” beat Botley 6-0 in the Hampshire League match played at Fratton Park after the reserves’ clash with Bristol Rovers this afternoon. 

Sunday 22: Yesterday’s Portsmouth reserves fixture at Fratton Park attracted a crowd of 8,600. Pompey beat Bristol Rovers 5-0. Tomorrow evening the reserves travel to meet Charlton Athletic at The Valley (6pm)
