November 7-13: Title Hopes Take Another Knock At Fratton

Monday 7:  The England team to face Ireland at Maine Road on Wednesday 16 November has been named, and Pompey's Jack Froggatt is included. It is a well-deserved reward for the Sheffield-born outside-left, who has again been in sparkling form this season.

The omission of Jimmy Dickinson from the England team to face Ireland next week has taken many by surprise. Pompey's left-half appeared to have made the position his own with excellent performances for his country earlier this year.

Tuesday 8:  Pompey Reserves travel to London tomorrow to meet Charlton Athletic Reserves in the Midweek League. The Pompey team will be: Weaver, Elder, Earl, MacDonald, Field, Andrews, King, Wilson, Hunt, Henderson, Newman. Kick-off will be at 2.30pm.

Wednesday 9: Charlton Athletic 4, Portsmouth 1 (Mid Week League)

Friday 11:  Pompey will rely on the side that won so convincingly at Chelsea last week for their match against Stoke City at Fratton Park tomorrow. Team: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Scoular, Spence, Dickinson, Harris, Reid Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt.

Jimmy Stephen, Pompey's new record signing from Bradford Park Avenue, will make his first appearance for the club tomorrow when he turns out at right-back for the Reserves against Swindon Town Reserves at The County Ground.

Saturday 12:  Pompey, who have won just two of their seven home matches this season, will be looking to improve on that record in this afternoon's match against Stoke City. There are no changes to the advertised teams. Kick-off is at 2.30pm.

The final whistle has sounded at Fratton Park and Pompey have failed to win at home for the sixth time in eight matches.

Final score: Pompey 0 - 0 Stoke City Attendance: 33,257

Pompey's Championship-retention hopes took another knock at Fratton Park this afternoon as they once again failed to turn their superiority into goals. Their 0-0 draw with Stoke City was a huge disappointment for a crowd of 33,257.

Pompey had by far the major share of the play against Stoke but poor finishing let them down. Peter Harris did get the ball in the net but Jimmy Scoular was adjudged to have handled in the build-up and the goal was ruled out.

Pompey continued to batter away at the visitors goal in the second half. A Duggie Reid shot skimmed the crossbar but with time running out it was the visitors who came closest to grabbing victory when an effort from Malkin struck a post.

Pompey slip to sixth in the First Division table as a result of their goalless draw this afternoon. They have 19 points, six fewer than the leaders, Liverpool. Both clubs have played 16 matches.
