Curry Night success

A Pompey-themed curry menu has helped the Pompey History Society close in on its £25,000 target to buy the championship medals of a club legend.
The society’s campaign to raise £25,000 to buy Peter Harris’s medals from 1949 and 1950 raised around £350 towards the target at the event on Tuesday night at the Akash restaurant in Albert Road.
Former Pompey players John Milkins and Mick Mellows were guests of honour at the meal, which was attended by more than 40 people.
The specially conceived dishes included Rogan Josh Murphy, Devlin Dhansak, Chicken Tikka Mousinho and Conor Korma Chaplain.
Colin Farmery, chair of trustees at the society and who has been leading the fundraising, said: “It was a terrific evening and I can only thank John and Mick for coming and making the night so special.
“I must also thank Jaf and Faz Ahmed at the Akash. The food and staff were excellent and they couldn’t do enough for us. As a token of our appreciation, they are both now honorary members of the society.
“We are so close to reaching the total now – I estimate we have about £500 to go. We have two final fundraising efforts: a blind auction for a portrait of Peter Harris and an ‘Evening with Barry Harris’ event at Fratton Park. If these are well supported, I think we are there.”
