Members Newsletter - November 2024
Dear Member
At the end of October we had a fantastic “Morning With Milkins” event at Fratton Park where a good number of us spent a couple of hours with John, led by Colin Farmery, asking him questions and offering up memories of seeing him play. A fan from Canada, Alex Fullick, had just visited and had presented us with a football from 1965, signed by the whole squad plus George Smith, the manager and the likes of Gordon Neave. So John was really able to bring that gift alive with his stories.
Our next PHS Publishing book launch is getting closer. The book on the club's formation, "The Making of Modern Pompey & the Men Who Made It" by Mick Comben, is now being printed and will be available for purchase from the end of this month. The official launch is to be at our next evening event on December 4th in The Legends Lounge at Fratton Park, starting at 7:00 pm. Tickets are free for members and £6 for non-members (redeemable if a membership is purchased on the night). The book is £15 retail but only £12 for paid-up members of the Pompey History Society, and will be on sale. It can be signed by the author at the event and the programme is as follows:-
6.45 pm - Doors Open
7.00 pm - Illustrated Q&A with Ernie Howe, member of Pompey's 1982/83 Third Division title-winning team, on his memories of that season. Hosted by Johnny Moore
7.45 pm - Break
8.00 pm - The Making of Modern Pompey - Mick Comben
9.00 pm - Event ends

We also need to raise funds to purchase the Peter Harris medals, presented to him for winning the Championship in both 1949 and 1950. Colin Farmery is leading on that fundraising for us and has organised a coin collection to take place as fans come to the ground at the Millwall game on 27th November. We need a few more collectors on the night and a free ticket to the game comes with the job so if anyone is interested in helping us rattle a bucket then please email us on history@pompeyfc.co.uk with your details.
In addition, the Society provides volunteers to deliver the club stadium tours which are very well received by the public. Tours take place each match day and on other agreed occasions such as half-term holidays. We are now looking to add to the tour guide team. Please let us know if you are interested by emailing Mick Comben on history@pompeyfc.co.uk
Thanks a lot.
