George Smith's family visit Fratton Park

Smith family

Former Pompey manager George Smith spent the best part of ten years at Fratton Park in the 1960s, guiding the club to the third division title in 1962.

It was a pleasure to host his grandson Stephan and daughter Lynda at the ground recently, their first visit since the late 1960s.

Society Chair of Trustees Colin Farmery, who gave the family a guided tour, said: "George Smith was a coach and manager ahead of his time in many respects and his contribution to the English game is under-estimated. He was also a popular and respected manager of the team. We are looking forward to working with the family on a special exhibition about his time at the club, which is scheduled for next summer."
