September 1-5: Victory Against Everton Then Stoke
Wednesday 1: There are no last minute surprises in the Pompey team to face Everton tonight (6.30pm). As expected, Bowler deputises for the injured Flewin. Pompey: Butler, Rookes, Ferrier, Scoular, Bowler, Dickinson, Harris, Barlow, Reid, Phillips, Froggatt
Pompey tonight completed a remarkable double over Everton by beating them 5-0 at Goodison Park. They completely overwhelmed their hosts, just as they did just a week ago at Fratton Park when Everton were beaten 4-0.
Pompey took the lead after just three minutes, and it was Harris who fired them in front. Froggatt added two more in a five minute spell just before half time. Reid headed a fourth after 52 minutes, and Barlow completed the rout just before the end
It was an astonishing performance from the red-shirted Pompey side. Many of the crowd were heading for home long before the end, but those who stayed the distance were fulsome in their sporting applause for stand-in captain Phil Rookes and his men.
Tonight’s result puts Pompey at the top of the first division table for the first time since the war.
Their record reads: P4 W3 D1 L0 F12 A2 Pts7.
The Pompey party will now return to their hotel in Blackpool, where they will stay until Saturday, when they will move on to the Potteries for a difficult-looking fixture against Stoke City.

Thursday 2: Jack Froggatt scored twice in Pompey’s 5-0 win at Everton last night, taking his tally for the season to five in four matches.
Pompey goalkeeper Ernie Butler was mostly a spectator as his team-mates set about Everton in the 5-0 triumph at Goodison Park last night.
In the wake of Portsmouth’s 5-0 win at Everton last night there is some slightly grudging praise for them in at least one of this morning’s national newspapers.
Friday 3: Pompey will await the outcome of Reg Flewin’s fitness test before selecting their side to face Stoke at the Victoria Ground tomorrow (3pm). Flewin missed Wednesday night’s match at Everton with a rib injury. Bowler is again on standby to deputise.
While the first team are in action at Stoke tomorrow, Pompey Reserves will be taking on Southampton Reserves at Fratton Park (3pm). A good sized crowd is expected for the clash of two sides with 100% records in the Combination League.

Immediately after tomorrow’s reserve team match at Fratton Park, Pompey’s “A” team will meet Eastleigh in the Hampshire League.
At this week’s meeting of Portsmouth’s directors it was agreed that season ticket holders attending reserve team matches will, upon payment of the 2/- ground entry fee, be permitted to transfer free of charge to the centre section of the stand.
Saturday 4: Portsmouth will again be without Reg Flewin for today’s match at Stoke (3pm). Their centre-half and captain has failed to recover from the rib injury sustained against Burnley last week. Gerry Bowler will continue to deputise.

There is a familiar face in the Stoke City team this afternoon. Jimmy McAlinden, Pompey’s inside-right in the 1939 FA Cup winning side, lines up against his former club.
A slightly fortunate 37th minute goal from Peter Harris (pictured) was enough to give Portsmouth both points at Stoke this afternoon, but they had to mount a tremendous rear-guard action to withstand a second-half onslaught from the lively hosts.
Several coachloads of Pompey fans who had travelled through the night gave their team a warm welcome, and it would have quickly become apparent to them that this was going to be the Blues’ toughest test of the season to date.
Pompey gradually settled into their stride, and it was they who took the lead when Harris cut in from the right. His first shot was parried by ‘keeper Herod, but the rebound fell kindly to him and he forced it home
After the interval it was largely one-way traffic. Stoke hit the post and Rookes cleared another effort off the line. It was all hands to the pumps for Pompey, but the defence held firm to make it four wins in a row and five matches unbeaten.

It was stalemate at Fratton Park this afternoon as Pompey Reserves and Saints Reserves, the two sides in the Combination League with 100% records, fought out a 0-0 draw. A game that promised much, delivered little for a crowd of 11,500.

Portsmouth’s win at Stoke City this afternoon leaves them one point clear at the top of the first division with nine points from five matches. Derby and Charlton both have eight points. Birmingham City are in fourth place with seven points.
