November 15-21: Delight For Derby But Reserves Go Seven-Up

Friday 19: Portsmouth centre-forward Duggie Reid (left) has picked up an injury and will miss tomorrow's first v second clash at Derby County. Ike Clarke will move inside to replace him as leader of the line. Barlow is recalled at inside-left.

The full Pompey team to play at Derby County tomorrow is Butler, Rookes, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Delapenha, Clarke, Barlow, Froggatt.

Pompey Reserves, who are top of the Combination League, will meet Aldershot Reserves at Fratton Park tomorrow (2.30pm). The team will be: Humpston, Yeuell, Drummond, Elder, Bowler, Thompson, Brown, Phillips, Asher, Lawler, Parker.

Saturday 20: Pompey’s run of disappointing results continues. A combination of poor finishing and a goal conceded out of the blue consigned them to a 1-0 defeat in their top-of-the-table clash at Derby County this afternoon.

Pompey should have taken the lead on 10 minutes when good work from Harris culminated in him setting up a golden opportunity for either Froggatt or Delapenha, but both men failed to make contact with the ball with an open goal in front of them.

Derby countered quickly and Stamps had one effort rebound off an upright, but Pompey continued to give as good as they got for the remainder of the first half.

Derby kicked off the second half and immediately went ahead without a Pompey player touching the ball. A defensive slip allowed Steel through on goal. With Butler seemingly troubled by the low sun Steel beat him with a low cross-shot.

For a while it was all Derby, and Pompey had to hang on grimly to keep themselves in the game.

Eventually Pompey began to exert some pressure of their own, and it was Harris who was at the heart of everything. He set up Clarke whose shot on the turn cleared the bar, then the winger caused a terrific scramble in the Rams’ goalmouth.

Pompey continued to do most of the attacking in the closing minutes but their lack of punch in front of goal persisted, and they ended the afternoon slipping to third in the table.  Newcastle move into second place after beating Arsenal at Highbury

Pompey will now be looking to end this run of poor results to prevent the celebrations from turning sour when they entertain Arsenal in their designated Golden Jubilee match at Fratton Park next week.

Match Summary: Derby 1. Portsmouth 0

A crowd of 6,351 saw Pompey Reserves thrash their Aldershot counterparts 7-0 at Fratton Park this afternoon. Lawler (3), Asher (2), Phillips and Parker scored the goals that reinforced Pompey's position at the top of the Football Combination.

Match Summary: Portsmouth Reserves 7, Aldershot Reserves 0
