March 20-31: Pompey Turn On The Style To Beat Chelsea

Wednesday 22:  Pompey supporters certainly made themselves heard in the 44,000 crowd at Sunderland last Saturday. , Many of them, including this group, travelled overnight to rally around the Supporters' Club banner opposite the players' tunnel.

Pompey Reserves fielded two separate sides in order to fulfill their fixtures in two competitions this afternoon. One side drew 0-0 in a Combination Cup game at Reading. The other beat Leyton Orient 4-0 in a Midweek League match at Fratton Park.

Thursday 23:  Pompey have received some good news about Jack Froggatt. The outside right was due to undergo a cartilage operation today but a further examination has shown that the injury is not as serious as was first thought, and the operation is not necessary 

Friday 24:  Pompey will be boosted by the return of Len Phillips and Jack Froggatt when they take on Chelsea at Fratton Park tomorrow. Ron Bennett and Duggie Reid drop out of the side that earned an excellent draw at Sunderland last week.

The Pompey side to face Chelsea at Fratton Park tomorrow (3pm) will therefore be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Pickett, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt.

Pompey Reserves, who are without a Combination fixture tomorrow, will play a friendly at Lymington. The team will be: Humpston, Rookes, Stephen, Spence, Cairney, Duggins, King, Pearson, Ekner, Atyeo, Dridge.

Pompey "A" play Bournemouth in a Hampshire League match at Bridgemary tomorrow. Team: Leather, Turner, Mansell, MacDonald, Field, Wilson, Wood, Delapenha, Ames, Henderson, Hunt.

Saturday 25:  The teams are out at Fratton Park. Pompey are hoping to collect two points from a Chelsea side who were beaten by Arsenal in their FA Cup semi-final replay on Wednesday afternoon.

The final whistle has sounded at Fratton Park where Pompey have romped to victory against Chelsea.

Result: Pompey 4 - 0 Chelsea Pompey scorers: Duggie Reid (3), Peter Harris Attendance: 28,574

Pompey turned on the style to beat Chelsea 4-0 in front of 28,574 at Fratton Park this afternoon. Duggie Reid, who wasn't expected to take part in the match, scored a hat-trick of headers. 

Len Phillips failed a late fitness test, which meant that Duggie Reid got a late call-up. He powered a header past Medhurst from Jack Froggatt's corner to put Pompey ahead in the 11th minute.

Peter Harris doubled Pompey's advantage in the 38th minute, taking the ball round Medhurst and tapping it home.

Two minutes later Jimmy Dickinson's corner found the head of Reid, and the big Scotsman again found the net to put Pompey 3-0 up at the break. 

Reid completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute, nodding in a pinpoint cross from Peter Harris. 

Chelsea, although outclassed, failed to give up and were unlucky not to pull a goal back when Bentley broke through and saw his shot hit the base of the post.

Thursday 30:  In a game of poor quality, Pompey Reserves drew 0-0 with Arsenal Reserves in this afternoon's Midweek League match at Fratton Park. The Pompey team was: Leather, Turner, Mansell, MacDonald, Field, Duggins, King, Elder, Ames, Henderson, Hunt. 

Portsmouth Reserves 0, Arsenal Reserves 0

Four players on Pompey's books will be on show in tomorrow's Army Cup final at Aldershot. Pte Dennis Hall, Pte John Beale and Cpl Brian Edwards will play for RAOC Hilsea. Gunner Charlie Dore will appear for 64th Training Regiment, RA (Oswestry).  

Pompey have agreed to send a team to Ilfracombe on Wednesday 3 May to help the Devonshire club in their jubilee celebrations and for the benefit of Jack Lang, Ilfracombe's Hampshire-born player-manager. 

Friday 31:  Following their bright exhibition against Chelsea last Saturday Pompey will rely on the same 11 men for tomorrow's visit to Stoke City. The Blues will be hoping to bring home a full basket to boost their hopes of retaining the League title.

The full Pompey line-up for the visit to Stoke City tomorrow will be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Clarke, Pickett, Froggatt.

Pompey Reserves will face Reading Reserves in a Combination fixture at Fratton Park tomorrow afternoon (3pm). The Pompey side will be: Humpston, Rookes, Stephen, Howard, Spence, Duggins, Wood, Gordon, Atyeo, Phillips, Bennett.

The Pompey "A" team, who are fighting for promotion to Division One of the Hampshire League, travel to Bournemouth tomorrow. Team: Leather, Turner, Mansell, Gunter, Cairney, Wilson, King, Elder, Ames, Henderson, Hunt. 

A fourth Pompey side will play a friendly against Sussex County League club Arundel tomorrow. The line-up will be: Aslett, Butler, Earl, Sanderson, Field, Andrews, Wilde, Burgess, Smith, Leadbetter, Dridge.
