January 17-23: Chimes Ring Out Around Charlton's Valley As Pompey Top The League

Monday 17:  Portsmouth Secretary Mr Dan Clarke has said the club have been overloaded with postal applications for wing stand seats for the forthcoming cup tie against Sheffield Wednesday at Fratton Park. No further applications will be accepted.

Ministry of Labour officials are concerned that absenteeism will affect industrial output in the Birmingham area when two big cup replays take place this afternoon: Aston Villa v Bolton Wanderers and Birmingham City v Leicester City.

Sheffield Wednesday will be staying in Worthing to prepare for their big match against Pompey in the fourth round of the Cup at Fratton Park next week. Meanwhile, 83,000 fans watched the two third round, second replays in Birmingham this afternoon.

10,000 Pompey supporters are expected to make the trip to The Valley on Saturday for the important First Division match against Charlton Athletic. In case you missed it, here is the information about an additional British Railways excursion train.

Wednesday 19:  Pompey right-back Phil Rookes, who missed last week's match because of an injured ankle, will not play against Charlton on Saturday. His mother died on Monday and he has been at home without treatment or training. Jasper Yeuell will again deputise.

Thursday 20:  An important reminder for Pompey shareholders and season ticket holders.

Friday 21:  Charlton officials are expecting their biggest crowd of the season when Pompey visit The Valley tomorrow. The combination of attractive opposition, Charlton's own good form and a huge influx of visiting supporters could see the gate exceed 60,000.

The Pompey team to face Charlton Athletic at The Valley tomorrow will be: Butler, Yeuell, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Barlow, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt.

Pompey Reserves entertain West Ham United Reserves in the Combination Cup at Fratton Park tomorrow afternoon. The Pompey team will be: Humpston, Hindmarsh, Drummond, Neave, Bowler, Thompson, Brown, Beale, Reid, Lawler, Parker.

The Pompey "A" team have a Hampshire League engagement against Portsmouth Civil Service at Hilsea tomorrow. Youngsters Johnny Gordon, Jackie Henderson and Alex Wilson will all get another chance to impress.

Pompey have high hopes for local boy Phil Gunter and he will take his place in the "B" team for their friendly at Fleetlands tomorrow afternoon.

Interesting developments in Birmingham after the two FA Cup third round, second replays on Monday afternoon.

Saturday 22:  Jimmy Lawler, Pompey's reserve inside-left, was transferred to Southend United last night. The 26-year-old arrived at Pompey from Glentoran in October 1947. He is expected to turn out for Southend in their match against Port Vale this afternoon.

Jimmy Lawler's transfer to Southend United means that Johnny Gordon, the local boy who signed professional forms for Pompey only yesterday, steps up from the "A" team to take his place in Pompey Reserves side to face West Ham this afternoon.

A crowd of 61,475 saw Pompey record a thoroughly deserved 1-0 win against Charlton Athletic at The Valley this afternoon. Ike Clarke scored the goal that extends Pompey's lead at the top of the First Division to three points.

This win was worth it's weight in gold, and was more decisive than than the narrowness of the scoreline suggests. Charlton had Sam Bartram to thank for preventing a hiding.

Pompey's winner came after 23 minutes when Ike Clarke found the space to send in a low, hard drive that left Bartram helpless.

Charlton spared nothing in their attempts to upset the League leaders, but Pompey were always too good for them. A shot from Vaughan thumped against a Pompey post but there was little else to trouble a Pompey defence superbly marshalled by Flewin.

There can be no question about the importance of the support given by Pompey's supporters this afternoon. There were countless thousands of them all around The Valley, and the the constant peeling of "The Chimes" made it seem like a home match!  Match Summary: Charlton Athletic 0, Portsmouth 1

Pompey Reserves thrashed West Ham United Reserves 6-0 at Fratton Park this afternoon in the Cup. Duggie Reid scored five of the goals to the delight of an excellent crowd of 7,400. Match Summary: Portsmouth Reserves 6, West Ham United Reserves 0

A youthful Portsmouth "A" team beat Portsmouth Civil Service 2-0 in their Hampshire League Division Two fixture at Hilsea this afternoon.

Sunday 23:  A great win for Pompey at Charlton / Six goals for the Reserves / "A" team win too.  All the details were in last night's Football Mail.
