A missed penalty, good goalkeeping, squandered chances and the woodwork cost Pompey both points in their important League match against lowly Bolton Wanderers this afternoon.
Pompey missed a golden opportunity to take an early lead when Duggie Reid was fouled in the penalty area. The big Scotsman took the spot-kick himself but saw his effort turned behind for a corner by keeper Hanson.
The Bolton 'keeper then made fine saves from Reid and Jack Froggatt as Pompey kept their hosts on the back foot.
The Trotters wrested back the initiative in the 63rd minute when Langton and Moir opened up a chance for Lofthouse to force a shot past Ernie Butler.
As Pompey fought to save a point Reid missed a simple chance, then Len Phillips saw his fierce drive rebound off the crossbar.
This was a game that Pompey could, and should, have won. They will be extremely disappointed about returning home empty-handed from a meeting with a side in the lower reaches of the First Division table.
Tonight Pompey are in fourth place in the table with 34 points from 28 matches.
Liverpool are top (38 from 28), then come Manchester United (37 from 28) and Blackpool (36 from 27).
Sunderland (34 from 28) are below Pompey on goal average.
Match Summary: Bolton Wanderers 1, Portsmouth 0
