February 13-19: Ships Signalled To Release Sailors For Big Cup Game But United Win Easily

Monday 13:  If Pompey beat Manchester United in their FA Cup fifth round replay on Wednesday afternoon they will face an away tie against Chelsea or Chesterfield in the quarter final.

The full draw for the FA Cup quarter finals is:

Liverpool v Blackpool or Wolverhanpton Wanderers

Derby County v Everton

Chelsea or Chesterfield v Manchester United or Pompey

Arsenal v Leeds United

All ties will be played on Saturday 4th March.

Wednesday 15:  Long queues are forming at all the Fratton Park turnstiles as supporters arrive for the Pompey v Manchester United FA Cup fifth round replay. Club officials are anticipating a capacity crowd.

Factories and offices in the Portsmouth area are reporting high levels of absenteeism as workers head to Fratton Park for this afternoon's big cup replay.

Commanding Officers of ships and establishments have received a signal from Admiral of the Fleet Sir Algernon Willis:

"Leave may be granted to ratings who can be spared and who wish to attend the football match at Fratton Park.”

With Duggie Reid still unfit, Pompey rely on the same players who were on duty at Old Trafford for this afternoon's replay at Fratton Park: Butler, Hindmarsh Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Clarke, Froggatt, Phillips, Parker.

Kick-off in the Portsmouth v Manchester United FA Cup fifth-round replay is just under an hour away. Fratton Park looks quite full, and there are still thousands of people outside the ground.

The Fratton Park turnstiles have now been closed behind a full-house crowd. Frogmore Road and the other approaches are still choked with supporters who have been unable to get in.

Pompey's dream of landing that elusive "double" was shattered when they were beaten 3-1 by Manchester United in an FA Cup replay at Fratton Park this afternoon.

Pompey received a deafening reception from a crowd 49,962. The gates had been closed long before kick-off. Police estimate that up to 10,000 supporters were locked out. A commentary was relayed to them via loudspeakers.

Cliff Parker might have put Pompey in front before United scored from their first attack in the 10th minute through Mitten.

Delaney doubled United’s lead but Peter Harris brought Pompey back into the game with a superb strike from a tight angle.

Within a minute of the resumption Delaney restored the visitors’ advantage and Pompey spent the remainder of the game attempting to penetrate a stonewall defence.
