March 7-13: Pompey Silence The Roker Roar

Monday 7:  The cost of tickets for Pompey's FA Cup semi-final tie v Leicester City at Highbury has now been confirmed. Seats will be 21/-, 10/6 and 7/6. The enclosure is 6/-, and the ground 2/6.

A colour clash will necessitate a change for both teams when Pompey meet Leicester City in the cup semi-final later this month. Pompey will play in red shirts and black knickers. Leicester will wear white shirts and black knickers.

Tuesday 8:  HMS Daedalus and RAOC Hilsea will meet in the final of the United Services Challenge Cup at Fratton Park tomorrow afternoon. Kick-off is at 2.45pm. 

Pompey centre-forward Ike Clarke has a touch of Pleurisy and will miss Saturday's match against Sunderland at Roker Park. 

*IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT*  Clothes rationing is to end - probably on 1st April, according to this piece in the Stop Press of tonight's Evening News. The rationing of clothing was introduced in 1941. 

Wednesday 9:  66 special buses were used to help shift the crowd of more than 48,000 after the recent Pompey v Newport County FA Cup match. 33 double deckers, 14 single deckers and 19 trolley buses augmented the scheduled service, according to the City Council. 

Pompey director Alderman John Privett is to be the next Lord Mayor of the City of Portsmouth. 

Pompey's allocation of 25,000 tickets for the FA Cup semi-final against Leicester City will go on sale at Fratton Park this Sunday, 13th March at 10am.

British Railways will be running 16 "football special" trains to London for Pompey's FA Cup semi-final match against Leicester City at Highbury. The first of these will depart Portsmouth Harbour at 6.15am. 

The football specials will call at Portsmouth Town ONLY on the outward journey, but will stop additionally at Havant and Fratton on the return trip. 

Friday 11:  Miss P J King of Bognor Regis is unhappy about the arrangements for distributing FA Cup semi-final tickets. 

Injury and illness force Pompey into making changes to their side for the difficult-looking visit to Sunderland tomorrow. Clarke and Barlow will be missing. In come Reid and Parker. Froggatt switches to centre-forward.

The full Pompey side for the match at Sunderland tomorrow will be: Butler, Yeuell, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Froggatt, Phillips, Barlow. 

There should be a good crowd at Fratton Park tomorrow to see Pompey Reserves take on Arsenal Reserves in the Combination Cup (3pm). Pompey: Humpston, Rookes, Drummond, Elder, Bowler, Thompson, Gordon, Brown, Asher, Beale, Bennett. 

Also to be played at Fratton Park tomorrow is the semi-final of the Pickford Shield: Portsmouth Boys v Isle of Wight Boys. Kick off is at 11am. 

Saturday 12:  Gosport Borough Athletic, who are without a league match tomorrow, will play a friendly against QPR "A" at Privett Park. (3pm). 

On his return to first-team action after an absence of four months Duggie Reid scored twice to help Pompey to a magnificent 4-1 victory over Sunderland at Roker Park this afternoon.

Pompey had to come from behind to beat the Rokerites, who took an early lead through Ivor Broadis. 

Jack Froggatt headed Pompey level after 25 minutes, and from then on it was the visitors who took complete command. Duggie Reid and Len Phillips added further goals before the interval. 

In the 51st minute Duggie Reid fired home through a cluster of players to end Sunderland's hope of a comeback. Many in the crowd of 57,229 were heading for home long before the final whistle.  Match Summary: Sunderland 1, Portsmouth 4

Pompey's fine win and results elsewhere mean that the Blues sit five points clear at the top of the Division One table tonight.

There was a crowd of more than 8,000 at Fratton Park this afternoon to see a relatively inexperienced Pompey Reserves side lose 1-0 to the Arsenal Reserves. Match Summary: Portsmouth Reserves 0, Arsenal Reserves 1

Queues are already forming at Fratton Park where tickets for Pompey's FA Cup semi-final at Highbury go on sale at 10am tomorrow. Many of those at the head of the queue took up their positions immediately after this afternoon's Reserve match. 

Sunday 13:  A 4-1 win away from home for Pompey made for extremely good reading in last night's Football Mail. 

Scottish selectors John McKinnon and James Johnson were at Sunderland yesterday and were apparently very impressed by the performance of Pompey's right-half Jimmy Scoular. 

Pompey's allocation of 25,000 tickets for their FA Cup semi-final against Leicester City at Highbury were boxed up and kept safe overnight at the city's police headquarters. The selling process gets underway at 10am this morning.

40 policemen under Superintendant L E G Cooper have been deployed to the Fratton Park area to control the queues of supporters waiting to buy FA Cup semi-final tickets.

The first phase of the procedure for the selling of Pompey's ticket allocation for the FA Cup semi final is now complete. Thousands of fans, many of whom queued overnight, left Fratton Park clutching their tickets this morning.

Police estimate that the total length of the queues for semi final tickets was in excess of two miles by the time the tickets went on sale at 10am today.

One of the ticket queues extended along Frogmore Road and the length of Goldsmith Avenue to Fratton Bridge. Supporters trying to join the queue at Fratton Bridge were prevented from doing so, and were directed to other queues.

An even longer queue snaked back from the south stand turnstiles into Frogmore Road, Carisbrooke Road, Specks Lane, Milton Lane, and over the railway footbridge into the streets of Fratton.
