Bring a Pound For Peter’s Medals!

Peter Harris

Pompey fans are being asked to bring a pound (or two or three…) with them to Wednesday night’s game against Millwall at Fratton Park and pop it in a Pompey History Society’s charity bucket to help it reach its target of £25,000 to secure buying buy Peter Harris’s two gold championship medals from 1949 & 1950 for posterity.

Around £5,000 has already been raised towards the goal, which the society is targeting achieving by the end of 2025, thanks in part to a generous donation of £500 from the Portsmouth Supporters’ Club (Central Branch) and the proceeds of the event in September to launch Neil Allen’s acclaimed book Played Up Pompey 4.

All monies raised are being ringfenced in a special account, called the Gerry Spraggs Fund, named in memory of society member and co-author of the Portsmouth FC 125 official history, who died last year.

Colin Farmery, chair of trustees at the society and who is leading the fundraising campaign, said: “We have a secure option to buy these precious medals at a fixed price, but we need to raise the money to bring them properly into the archive and put them on display so fans can see them and learn all about Peter’s fantastic Pompey career.

“He was a Portsmouth boy who won two league titles with his home-town club and also played for England. He is also the club’s record league goalscorer with 194.

“The society took in a number of Peter’s personal effects, including all his playing contracts, a few years ago and we bought his Football Combination championship-winning medal from 1947 at auction in 2019. Getting these two significant medals will go a long way to creating a complete Peter Harris collection.”

As well as the bucket collection, the society is also embracing new technology. Fans can also pop a virtual pound into our PayPal Gerry Spraggs Fund account. Click here to do so.
