Guy Wharton - A gift from down under

Guy Wharton

The Pompey History Society receives memorabilia from places far and wide and recently one came on Facebook from Queensland, Australia.

Guy Wharton was a member of Pompey’s cup winning side in 1939 and would play for the club again after the Second World War.  Guy started his career at Chester and then moved to Wolves before joining Pompey on 9 November 1937.  He thanked the midland club by being part of the side to beat them against the odds on 29 April 1939.

Captain Guy

His great niece, Lisa Hodgkinson, got in touch over Facebook telling us stories and a copy of a rare piece of memorabilia from the 1939 Final.

Lisa tells us that her Uncle Guy was a true gentleman and he used to travel to visit his mum in Broomhill, a tiny village near Barnsley almost every Sunday bringing with him a tin of rice pudding for his niece.

Signature

She has in her possession a copy of the Community Singing Song Sheet which she has sent a copy to us.  Back in the day the singing was a major part of the build up to the big event ending with ‘Abide with me’

Guy passed away in May 1990 in Wolverhampton aged 73.

Lisa, many thanks for that song sheet and memories of Guy.  The more information of players from our past the more complete will be our archive.
