| Match Summary | After three games to get past Hull City in Round 3 Pompey got their reward of a trip to meet the mighty Spurs at White Hart Lane and the ground was ringed with Blues fans well before the gates opened at 1pm. It is estimated that around 15,000 made the trip on a fleet of special trains, coaches etc. and the crowd of 57,910 would never be exceeded by Spurs until they moved to their new ground. The game was as tough as expected especially with both Haydock and McCann missing from the small squad of eighteen that George Smith worked with. Two Alan Gilzean goals just after half time (the second way off-side) and a Jimmy Greaves strike settled the affair with Ron Tindall replying after Pointer hit a post to send the Pompey fans home happy. Unused substitute Johnny Gordon had made his final and 489th appearance the previous week. |
