Biography | Bob Jackson had been Pompey's chief scout prior to becoming manager on the retirement of Jack Tinn in the summer of 1947. Fifty years of age, he entered the professional ranks in 1914 when, at the age of 17, he signed for Atherton, a Lancashire League club. Following service in the first World War, he played for a number of clubs including Lancaster Town, Tranmere Rovers, Darwin, Bury and others and scored altogether some 400 goals. At 37 he accepted the invitation to join the scouting staff of Bolton Wanderers and later, he coached young players at the club. Before joining the Pompey scouting staff he was Secretary-Manager of Worcester City. He managed Pompey to its two league championship titles but resigned in the summer of 1952 to join ambitious Hull City in a similar position. He could not replicate his success at Fratton Park and was dismissed in March 1955. |
