Harry Wain's ten year period on the board was split by the period 8 May 1950 and 1 March 1951 when, along with Chairman Richard Vernon Stokes, he was suspended 'sine die' by the Football Association for irregularities over a payment of £750 to the player Jimmy McAlinden, to entice him back to Fratton Park in 1946. The ban was lifted after reconsideration of the facts by the FA. The Wain family were fruiterers and provision merchants (established 1908) operating from numerous premises in Portsmouth and suppliers to the Admiralty.
