Biography | 'Monty' was a senior British Army Officer who saw action in the first World War, the Irish war of independence and the second World War. He commanded the British Eighth Army in the Western Desert campaign (1942/43), the invasion of Sicily and Italy. Subsequently, he was in command of all Allied ground forces during the Battle of Normandy (Operation Overlord) and then the 21st Army Group for the rest of the North West Europe campaign, accepting the surrender of the German forces at Luneberg Heath on 4th May 1945. Post war he occupied a number of roles in the British Army and NATO before retiring in 1958. 'Monty' proved equally inspiring in his role as President of Pompey. It is believed he first suggested the change of socks to red to reflect the patriotic red, white and blue kit and regularly attended matches at Fratton Park. |
