Biography Bill made only 12 appearances spread across the two championship seasons but etched his name into Pompey folklore with the two goals he scored at Fratton Park against Aston Villa as a makeshift centre forward on 6 May 1950, the first after just 20 seconds, to clinch the championship for the second time. After a spell at Bournemouth, he went into management at Worcester City and Exeter City before returning to Fratton Park as caretaker manager in 1961 following the dismissal of Freddie Cox. Coaching spells abroad followed before retirement.
