Biography Possessed of a fierce temper and a combative approach to the game, Jimmy was a very fine player and an integral part of the championship winning sides. An ever present in 1948/49, Jimmy missed just six games the following season, including the finale because of his dismissal in a previous game. It was perhaps his temperament which led to him playing so few games for his country (nine in total) and possibly led to his unexpected transfer to Newcastle United in June 1953. However, he enjoyed seven seasons of football on Tyneside and captained the team to a win in the 1954/55 Cup Final before moving on as player manager to Bradford Park Avenue. Later he would manage Cardiff City (1964-1973) into European competition via Welsh Cup success and Newport County.
