Biography Yorkshireman Bert signed for Portsmouth from Wolves for £8,500 in February 1939 and was a goal scorer in the FA Cup final 4-1 victory against his former team mates two months later. A regular throughout the war years, Bert played in the 1941/42 War Cup Final against Brentford at Wembley. He played 29 games in the first championship season, scoring 8 times. After leaving Pompey he saw service with Leicester City and Colchester United.
