Match Summary | The fixtures were very tough for Pompey over Easter 1931. After holding Champions Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at Fratton on Good Friday the next day second placed Villa were the visitors, Pompey put them to the sword with Jimmy Easson putting them ahead after just four minutes. With the Blues playing some great football is was no surprise that Jack Smith and a rare goal from David Thackeray saw them lead 3-0 at the break. Despite continuing playing well it took after half an hour before Easson added his second and with the crowd calling for five John Weddle obliged before the end. Pompey would hold Arsenal again at Highbury on Monday and would finish the season fourth, their highest before the war. Easson would finish as top scorer earning himself a Scotland call up. |
