August 1-7: Wartime Restrictions On Midweek Games Are To Be Relaxed

Tuesday 2:  A date for your diaries.

The four British Football Associations are to enter the World Cup Competition for the first time. The winners of this season's Home International Tournament will qualify for the final stages to be held in Brazil next summer.

Thursday 4:  Restrictions on midweek football are being relaxed, and clubs will be allowed to stage FA Cup replays on midweek afternoons if it is more convenient for them to do so.

The current restrictions on midweek afternoon football were imposed in order to prevent wide scale absenteeism as the country continues to rebuild its economy after the war.

The return to midweek afternoon replays also means that the FA Cup rule requiring clubs to play extra-time when the scores are level after 90 mins in the first match has been dropped.

FA Cup replays are to take place in the week immediately following the original tie, and extra time will be played if necessary. Second replays (where required) must take place on the Monday immediately following the first replay.

A Fareham Cricket XI beat Pompey by 77 runs at Bath Lane this afternoon. The cricketers scored 208-8. Pompey in reply lost four wickets for two runs, but Cliff Parker saved his side from a complete rout with an immaculate innings of 67.

Pompey's chairman and manager were at White Hart Lane this afternoon to see a match (Whites v Reds) put on by the Spurs to experiment with the offside law. The pitch was divided into "thirds", and players could not be offside in the central third.

Friday 5:  Pompey's 23 year-old left-half Jimmy Dickinson, who won three England caps this summer, could be playing in the World Cup in Brazil next year if England qualify for the final stages by winning the Home International Championship.
