| Match Summary | Pompey pick up their first EFL Trophy after a marathon struggle with Sunderland at a packed Wembley Stadium. Both clubs sell over 40,000 tickets meaning a record crowd for the competition of 85,021 and they see a classic match. Sunderland boss the first half and lead at the break through an Aiden McGeady deflected free kick. Kenny Jackett rouses his troops and Pompey come storming back and with Evans on for Curtis, Lowe goes close and Pitman hits a post before on 82 minutes Evans crosses and Nathan Thompson appears from nowhere to head the equaliser - his only Pompey goal. Into extra time and with six minutes left Lowe breaks away and lobs McLaughlin with a majestic goal fitting to win a final but McGeady is having nothing of it an squeezes in a last minute leveller. A nail-biting shoot out follows with Cattermole having his kick saved by MacGillivray leaving Oli Hawkins to become the hero by slamming home the winner. Kenny summed up "we came back well and dominated the second half and the majority of extra-time and I do feel we deserved to win it overall." |
