Match Summary | Match of the Day pays its first visit to Fratton and could not have picked a more thrilling and controversial game. Portwood back from injury puts Pompey 2-0 up at the break but Wolves pushing for promotion storm back lead by skipper Mike Bailey. He pulled one back on 71 and had another effort saved by Milkins before crossing for Peter Knowles to equalise. Knowles exuberantly picked the ball out of the net and hoisted it over the Fratton stand and into Specks Lane! Worse was to follow on 81 minutes Milkins and Woodfield clashed in the box and both were left lying on the ground the ball was cleared out to the left wing, referee Mr Johnson waved play on and when the cross came in Hunt headed into an unguarded net. Pandemonium broke out but the referee after consulting his lineman allowed the goal to stand; Milkins was led away with a broken left arm. Great entertainment for BBC viewers but not the Fratton faithful! Cliff Portwood was always proud of the fact he scored Pompey's first goal on MOTD. |
