Biography | Generally regarded as one of the most skilful and complete footballers ever to pull on a Pompey shirt, Len joined Pompey in 1946 from the Royal Marines, with whom he had served with distinction during the war, being one of the first ashore on D-Day. He debuted in a League South encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers a day after signing, going on to make 10 appearances in the 1945/46 season. Len would make just two appearances in the first post war season but by the end of 1947/48 he was a first team regular and over the championship seasons played 74 times, scoring 16 goals. Football League recognition followed before he won the first of three caps for his country in November 1951 against Northern Ireland at Villa Park. Sadly, a freak injury sustained at an England training camp in the spring of 1955 effectively ended his top flight career and he made just one further appearance after recovery early in 1956. After his release, Len went on to play non-league for Poole Town, Bath City and Waterlooville before following the first team from his seat in the South Stand in retirement. |
