Biography Phil had an early opportunity to prove his worth to his new club when making his debut six days after signing, when deputising for Bill Rochford in a run of five matches. However, war service in the Royal Navy robbed him of the chance to add to his tally over the next six seasons, although he did appear at Wembley in the 1941/42 War Cup Final against Brentford. Post war, Phil made the right back position his own until sustaining a broken ankle in the FA Cup tie against Stockport County in January 1949, ending a run of 25 league appearances in the first championship season. Infrequent appearances only followed before he was released in July 1951 to Colchester United.
