September 1-4: Pompey Improve To Put 5 Past Middlesbrough In The North East Sunshine

Thursday 1:  How The Evening News saw Pompey's disappointing defeat at Manchester City last night.

Last night's results and up-to-date league tables. Pompey have just one win from their four matches. The Daily Express does not expect to see them retain the League Championship.

Friday 2:  After three disappointing results in their matches against Manchester City (twice) and Blackpool, Pompey make a change to their forward line for tomorrow's match at Middlesbrough. Lindy Delapenha replaces Duggie Reid at inside-right.

The full Pompey team to face Middlesbrough at Ayresome Park tomorrow (3pm) will therefore be: Butler, Hindmarsh, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Delapenha, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt.

League Champions Pompey are just four matches into their new season. Are some observers panicking prematurely?

Pompey Reserves face Brentford Reserves at Fratton Park tomorrow (3pm). Pompey Reserves: Humpston, Yeuell, Rookes, Elder, Duggins, Spence, Dawson, Gordon, Asher, Pickett, Bennett.

A young Portsmouth "A" team face Pirelli General in a Hampshire League fixture at Bridgemary tomorrow: Aslett, Duncan, Mansell, Turner, Field, MacDonald, Woods, Pearson, Robson, Hunt, Evans.

A Portsmouth "B" team will play Portchester tomorrow afternoon. The Pompey line-up will be: Leather, Voysey, Lillington, Hazell, Howard, Moody, Smith, Clements, Pocock, Wilson, Henwood.

Saturday 3:  It's sunny and warm at Ayresome Park where Pompey are looking to end a run of three games without a win. A bumper crowd looks likely despite a token strike by the Middlesbrough Corporation bus drivers. Kick off is in 15 minutes.

The final whistle has sounded and Pompey have answered their critics with an emphatic victory at Ayresome Park.

Full time: Middlesbrough 1 - 5 Pompey Pompey scorers: Froggatt, Clarke, Harris (3) Attendance: 41,974

A Jack Froggatt header gave Pompey a 17th minute lead at Middlesbrough. McKennan equalised from the penalty spot two minutes later. Ike Clarke restored the lead on 32 minutes and Peter Harris scored a late hat-trick to turn a fine win into a rout.
