July 25-31: Jimmy Dawson Signs And Fratton Park Is Revamped As Pompey Bowl Out United Services For 112 Before Lunch

Just days after announcing that there will be no new signings this summer Pompey have confirmed that winger Jimmy Dawson has joined the club from Leicester City on a free transfer. 

Tuesday 26:  Major improvements to Fratton Park will be completed before the start of the new season. The terrace at the Milton End has been concreted fully for the first time. The height of each step is four inches. The bank at the top is being raised. 

As well as the building work at the Milton End the unterraced sloping section just above the wall on the north side has been replaced by terracing. This should reduce the amount of jostling backwards and forwards suffered by spectators. 

All the big sliding exit gates at Fratton Park have been taken away and renovated, and each turnstile booth has been fitted with a glass top to enable the stilemen to count cash more easily. 

The development work that is taking place at Fratton Park is the limit for which the authorities will grant a licence, but the Pompey board hope to concrete the terracing at the station end in the next few years. 

Workmen add the finishing touches to the newly-concreted terracing at the Milton End of Fratton Park. This summer re-profiling work has also taken place on the lower reaches of the north terrace. 

Wednesday 27:  The Portsmouth FC team to meet a Portsmouth XI in the Cricket Week at Alexandra Park tomorrow will be: Easson, Dickinson, Flewin, Parker, Froggatt, Phillips, Duggins, Bennett, Delapenha, Aslett, Hunt. 

Thursday 28:  Tommy Brown, Pompey's diminutive reserve inside forward, has left the club to join Watford. Brown arrived at Fratton Park from Dunfermline in 1946 after being spotted while playing RAF football. 

Pompey's footballers were beaten by 121 runs in their match against a Portsmouth Cricket Representative XI at Alexandra Park today. The cricketers made 233-9 dec. Jack Froggatt (2-43) and Jimmy Easson (3-60) were the pick of the Pompey bowlers. 

In reply Pompey were all out for 112. Eric Duggins made a painstaking 53, Jack Froggatt 19 and Jimmy Dickinson 18.

On Saturday Pompey will take to the cricket field again when they play United Services at the Officers' Ground, Burnaby Road. 

Saturday 30:  Pompey beat United Services by nine wickets in the charity cricket match played at Burnaby Road this afternoon. Services were bowled out for 112 before lunch. In reply Eddie Lever and Jimmy Dickinson shared a first wicket stand of 86.

With their cricket match at Burnaby Road finishing early Pompey and United Services decided to give the big crowd their money's worth by playing a two-hour knockabout. Pompey won that too, with Lindy Delapenha scoring a sparkling 87.

The League Championship Trophy was on display at the cricket match between Pompey and United Services at Burnaby Road today, A crowd of 2,276 helped swell the coffers of armed forces' charities.
