August 8-14: Pre Season Practice Games For Charity

Tuesday 9:  Pompey play the first of their two pre-season practice matches tomorrow evening when sides styled Blues and Reds face each other at Fratton Park. The Blues will be composed of the probable first team, with the Reds made up of reserves. 

Tomorrow's Blues v Reds pre-season practice match at Fratton Park kicks off at 6.00pm. Pompey are expecting a decent crowd. All proceeds go to local charities. 

Wednesday 10:  The Pompey first team (Blues) will line up as follows against the Reserves (Reds) in tonight's pre-season practice match at Fratton Park (ko 6.00pm): Butler, Yueull, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt.

The Reserves (Reds) team for the pre-season practice match is: Humpston, Hindmarsh, Butler (W), Elder, Field, Thompson, Dawson, Delapenha, Henderson, Pickett, Parker. 

A Fratton Park crowd of nearly 10,000 saw Pompey's first team beat the reserves 5-0 in the first of the pre-season practice matches tonight. Duggie Reid and Bert Barlow both netted twice. An own goal by Bill Thompson completed the scoring.

Friday 12:  Pompey stage their second and final pre-season practice match tomorrow afternoon when the first team (Blues) meet the reserves (Reds) at Fratton Park (3pm). Another good crowd is expected, and proceeds will again be donated to local charities. 

Len Phillips has a toe injury and will miss Pompey's second public practice match (Blues v Reds) at Fratton Park tomorrow. The Blues team is expected to be: Butler, Yeuell, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Clarke, Barlow, Froggatt 

The Reds team for tomorrow's final pre-season practice match is likely to be: Humpston, Hindmarsh, Rookes, Elder, Bowler, Thompson, Dawson, Delapenha, Asher, Pickett, Parker. 

Saturday 13:  Bill Rochford, Pompey's left back in the 1939 FA Cup winning side, has been appointed player-coach to Southampton. "Rockie" left Fratton Park to join the Saints in 1946 after making 138 first-team appearances for the Blues. 

17 year-old full-back Phil Gunter has signed forms as a part-time professional with Pompey. He is a local boy who works in the Dockyard and gave some impressive displays in the "A" and "B" teams last season. 

Pompey's first team (Blues) romped to an 8-1 win over the reserves (Reds) in the final pre-season trial match at Fratton Park this afternoon. Duggie Reid (3), Ike Clarke (2), Jack Froggatt, Bert Barlow and Jimmy Dickinson scored the Blues' goals. 

Blues 8, Reds 1 at Fratton Park

A total of 19,000 people watched the two pre-season trial matches at Fratton Park this week. The proceeds of more than £1,100 are to be donated to local charities.

Inside-left Len Phillips missed Pompey's two pre-season trial matches this week because of a sore toe, but he is expected to be fit to play in the first league match of the season at Newcastle United a week today.
