Pompey are a step closer to the Division One title after beating Liverpool 3-2 in front of a crowd of 35,013 at Fratton Park this afternoon, but they had to survive the scare of seeing their 3-0 lead trimmed by the visitors.

Pompey started strongly, showing no signs of a hangover from their shock exit from the FA Cup last week. They took the lead after 22 minutes with a glancing header from Ike Clarke.

Within three minutes Peter Harris doubled Pompey's lead, beating goalkeeper Sidlow to the ball and forcing it home.

Liverpool looked a well-beaten side when Len Phillips made it 3-0 with a brilliant left-foot shot three minutes after the interval.

Liverpool pulled a goal back through Stubbins in the 55th minute, and shocked the Fratton Park crowd when Bob Paisley added a second for the visitors just three minutes later.

For a while Pompey were rocked back on their heels, but they hung on to claim another two vital points in their pursuit of league glory in their golden jubilee season. Match Summary: Portsmouth 3, Liverpool 2

The Saints and their supporters are right behind Pompey, according to this letter in last night's Evening News.

A man has been arrested following an incident on the pitch at the end of yesterday's Pompey v Liverpool match at Fratton Park, when the visitors' goalkeeper appeared to be attacked.
