August 15-21: Cracking Start At Newcastle

Monday 15:  The Pompey "A" team will play a team of trialists at Fratton Park tomorrow night (k.o. 6pm). The "A" team will line up as follows: Aslett, Voysey, Mansell, Spence, Field, Andrews, Gordon, Pearson, Henderson, Hunt, Evans.

The trialists team to play against Pompey "A" at Fratton Park tomorrow night will be: Leather, Shell, Powers, Sanderson, Howard, Hancock, Smith, Clements, Robson, Roberts, Henwood. Admission to the match will cost sixpence. 

Tuesday 16:  Pompey "A" drew 2-2 with a Trialists' XI at Fratton Park tonight. Gordon and Evans scored for Pompey "A", Robson and Henwood for the Trialists. Goalkeeper Maurice Leather particularly caught the eye for the trialists. 

Thursday 18:  Pompey's reserve centre-half Gerry Bowler has joined Hull City. The two clubs have agreed terms and the player agreed to sign after meeting Hull manager Raich Carter at Boothferry Park today. Bowler made nine league and cup appearances for Pompey. 

Friday 19:  Pompey's defence of the League Championship gets underway tomorrow with a difficult-looking away match at Newcastle United. The Blues won 5-0 at St James' Park last season as the race for the title entered its final stages.

The Pompey team to face Newcastle United at St James' Park tomorrow will be: Butler, Yeuell, Ferrier, Scoular, Flewin, Dickinson, Harris, Reid, Clarke, Phillips, Froggatt. 

Pompey Reserves play host to Plymouth Argyle Reserves in the Combination League tomorrow (3pm). Pompey Reserves: Humpston, Hindmarsh, Rookes, Elder, Field, Thompson, Dawson, Delapenha, Henderson, Pickett, Parker.

A new tie for Pompey supporters is now available from Landport Drapery Bazaar. 

Saturday 20:  Pompey "A" meet Eastleigh Spartans in Division Two of the Hampshire League at Wych Lane this afternoon (3pm).

St James' Park is filling up quickly for the eagerly-awaited Newcastle United v Pompey clash. There is a healthy sprinkling of support for the visitors and the Pompey Supporters Club flag is proudly displayed on the terraces. Kick-off is at 3.15pm. 

Pompey's 1949/50 season has just kicked off, and the League Champions will be hoping for a good start to their defence of the title at Newcastle United. We'll have all the news from St James' Park shortly after the final whistle.

The full-time whistle has sounded at St James' Park.

Pompey's season got off to the best possible start when they outclassed Newcastle United to win 3-1 at St James' Park. Len Phillips, Ike Clarke and Peter Harris all found the net for Pompey before Robledo scored a consolation goal for the Magpies.

Pompey Reserves suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Plymouth Argyle in the Combination League this afternoon.
