Transcript Summary [00:00:00] Joan Elder, maiden name Drew, married to Jimmy Elder, now living in Wakefield in Yorkshire. Originally from Fratton in Portsmouth. Remembers during 1948 living in the Cambridge Arms pub in Cambridge Street, married in 1949 and moved away from Portsmouth then. Remembers Portsmouth Football Club purely came in to football due to boyfriend, football made like his mother and was courting from 1946. Mentions walking to Fratton Park and people streaming 1000s streaming and being taken along with the crowd. Walking was the main way of commuting as didn’t warrant a bus and not many cars. Walked from Fratton up Goldsmith Avenue. Remembers being in the cheap area in the stands along the side with current boyfriend at the time, William (Bill) Keast and his mother Vera. Keast family owned a pram shop in North End. Boyfriend lived in Railway View. Mentions tolerated football then but went due she was courting.
[00:04:15] Remembers one day passing out at the ground and come to being man handled with peoples arms on back, around 17 years old. First thought was did I show any knickers, ladies didn’t wear trousers in those days. Was very slim and bit ashamed and a little frightened, feeling hands passing you along and eventually taken behind the stand in the shade for a drink of water. Remembers it being due to the crowds and the heat, as well as mother in law standing behind leaning on shoulders because she was feeling the heat as well. Last visit to Fratton Park.
